Why College Accreditation Matters

Gone are the times, when there were just a few medium of education. With most of the knowledge being imparted at home, children either went to religious foundations or few available educational institutions. But in this new era, things have changed drastically. The number of educational institutions that impart training, learning and coaching to students are increasing with every second. India in today’s time has more than 300 universities that include central, state, deemed and private universities and above 2000 private institutions.

With such a neck to neck competition and ever growing list of colleges, how do you ascertain that a college is legitimate and offers certified courses? The answer to this is through accreditation. Accreditation is basically a kind of formal recognition bestowed on an education institution or to a type of degree program offered by any external independent authorized agency, which is established on the basis of a documented and well-defined criteria and standards. Once the accreditation is given to a college and the degree courses, it serves as a stamp of authentication that helps students and parents judge the worth of that college.

There are two accrediting agencies in India:

1. NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore)
2. NBA (National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi)

These two autonomous accreditation bodies are working under University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) respectively. These bodies were setup with aim to regulate the functioning of colleges and maintain high standard of education in India. Having been working now for many years now, they are continuing with that aim and living up to the expectations that people have with them. A strict procedure is setup and followed by them during the process of granting accreditation to any colleges. Only when a college fares well on all the quality parameters set up by them, the accreditation is imparted to it.

At a time when Indian institutions are trying to compete with the rest of the world to come at par with the best institutions across the globe, accreditation becomes an important element to show the quality standards being maintained here. Not only is that, institutions which are accredited are more favoured by employers, as they are well equipped and also the institution itself can assess, evaluate and improve their quality once they get accredited.

ACET, Amritsar is one such prestigious institution that is the first self-financed institute of  Punjab having obtained NBA & NAAC accreditations. In a short span of 13 years, the college has gained name and fame and has become 1st status, NBA and NAAC accreditation. It has been granted an autonomous status by University Grants Commission, New Delhi, making it the first autonomous engineering institute in North India to have Autonomous
